Excellence in Engineering

catch-up

october 2015

Demonstrating our commitment to sustainability has been a key focus for us this quarter.  As we continue to  team up with like-minded partners, we congratulate Kaner-Olette Architects for their win at the AJ Retrofit awards ceremony.  We are equally proud of our own regional winners' accolade with LABC.

Innovation, collaboration and digitisation of our services feature high on our list of priorities and we hope this newsletter goes some way to share with you what we've been up to as well as our plans to work with our partners and the property and construction community as a whole to offer greater value to clients.

The buzz in our offices also stems from our preparations to wrap up 2015 with a celebration; this year sees Crofton's 15th year of Engineering Excellence.

As always we welcome your feedback on this newsletter or any of our other online marketing activities, so please feel free to share your thoughts and ideas by emailing  at: marketing@crofton-design.com

what we've been up to...

Harbourside, Newhaven

This project entails the complete refurbishment of an existing listed building to a brand new marine engineering teaching facility.

UTC @ Harbourside in Newhaven has a total construction value of around £12m.  The construction and installation phase is scheduled to complete before Christmas.  This is an ‘exciting’ project for us, because we are applying BIM Level 2, with all our engineers working in Revit, incorporating the FF&E.  The biggest benefit to the client during the design was the ease of co-ordination and the early warning of clashes which could then be ironed out before the project reached site. .

Student Life in Canterbury

Work is well underway for this exciting student accommodation project.
The project promises 230 units in Canterbury’s tranquil city centre with all apartments overlooking the world famous Canterbury Cathedral.  We very much look forward to the planning phase which starts at the end of October.

Boughton Golf Club

This project consists of 2 parts; the entire refurbishment of the existing golf clubhouse and the addition of a brand new 30 bed hotel adjacent to the existing building.

The hotel will boast full catering kitchen facilities, a spa and a gymnasium.  The project is due for completion in 2016.

Moorhouse School & College

Moorhouse School & College is a specialist school located in Oxted for children and young people with speech & language difficulties.

This project consists of the demolition of an old site and the building of 3 brand new houses for students and a medical centre to cater for the special needs.

In total the 3 houses spread over 1138.6 square metres will comprise 36 bedrooms with each house including a dining area and a communal lounge.

We worked with Coleman architects of London on this £2.36m project which is due to complete in April next year.

Our team in Newhaven has won the 2015 Constructing Excellence Sustainability award category for London and the South East.  The team was awarded the accolade for its role on the new Big Parks project in Peacehaven. The award was presented on the 2nd July at an awards dinner at the Lancaster Hotel in London, which was attended by over 540 construction industry professionals.

6th Annual Velodrome Challenge

Our engineers got on their bikes to take part in the charitable event on Friday 18th September 2015 at London’s Herne Hill velodrome in aid of ChildHope. www.childhope.org.uk

ChildHope is an international children's charity that supports street and working children.
The charity works with local partners in Africa, Asia and South America and collaborates with children who are encouraged to get involved in finding solutions to transform their futures.

The charity hitherto raised £50,000 from the event over the past 6 years.

Led by Steven Hale - MD, the Crofton team of engineers together with Helen Hainsworth-Millar, one of Crofton's friends and partners, cycled vigorously around the track for 3 hours! Who said engineers are not fit?!

Thank you all for taking part!

15 years of Engineering Excellence

Fifteen years ago Steven Hale, our MD created and led Crofton Design with a clear eyed mission to deliver the highest standards in engineering services for the construction industry.

Over the years and despite the painful shortage of qualified professionals, Steven skilfully assembled teams of talented and dedicated engineers across the South East who won award after award and built what is now Crofton's impeccable reputation for delivering irreproachable mechanical, electrical, structural and civil engineering solutions.

The company embraced technology and is an active participant in the advancement of the profession and the wilful sharing of best practice within the built environment community.

Having earned its enviable position in the industry, Crofton is already known for investing in its people and is now well on its way to be recognised for its ability to leverage technology to deliver innovative solutions.  We are always open to collaboration in the R&D field and invite like-minded partners to make contact and join us in our quest for constructing excellence.

MIPIM UK 2015

We are delighted to be attending MIPIM UK this year. The second year of the UK’s largest exhibition and conference for property professionals.  Year after year we draw incredible value from the event; this convivial gathering helps us keep abreast of market developments as well as an opportunity to meet old friends, catch up with partners and introduce our services to prospective clients.

This year, it will be held again on 21-23 October at Kensington Olympia, London.  Our MD Steven Hale and Business Development Manager Mark Legg will be attending and look forward to seeing you there.

This year the charities supported are The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, The Jubilee Sailing Trust, Cirdan Sailing Trust and the British Sailing Team. Kaner Olette - Award Winning Architects

In this issue we wanted to congratulate our friends and partners Kaner Olette.  The award winning architects have recently reaped a coveted accolade at the AJ Retrofit Awards 2015.  The architects’ work on the sustainable design at the Peaceheaven project was recognised at the Constructing Excellence Awards ceremony in July this year where they picked up the sustainability category for London and the South East.

We are always delighted to be associated with like-minded partners who share the same commitment to preserving natural resources.  At Crofton Design we are observing a culture shift in the industry which is becoming increasingly sensitive to these considerations.  We asked Michael Kaner, Director at Kaner Olette how his company adapted to the increasing requirements for sustainable design and this is what he said:

"We have always had a strong interest in sustainable design in its wider meaning (ie an holistic approach rather than purely focused on low energy).  Therefore the increasing requirements have enabled us to continue and expand existing themes and we find that clients are more open to this approach.  Apart from the Peacehaven project we are exploring new construction techniques such as prefabricated straw bale walling for a learning centre in Harlow and a semi-autonomous cottage near Ross on Wye mixing micro renewables with passive design techniques.  We are always aiming for sustainability to be integral to the design through materials, daylight, energy as well as the context of history, culture and the setting.”
